Every year Momilani Elementary 5th and 6th graders come out to play for the schools basketball team. Students that have played basketball before and students that have never played in their life are welcomed to come out and play. The only requirements we have is the students always try their best and they keep up with all academic responsibilities throughout the short basketball season.
The team, coached by Mr. Tashiro, Mrs. Yasui, Mrs. Barnett and Mr. Kashiwa practice 4 times a week from 2:30-3:30.
Dribbling, passing, shooting and teamwork are the constant focus at every practice. The skills and concepts learned at practice are all done to help students compete against other Pearl City teams at the Complex Basketball tournament in November.

Complex Basketball Tournament
The tournament this year was hosted again at the Pearl City High School Gymnasium on Saturday, November 10, 2018. Players, parents, and coaches started arriving as early as 7:30 am. Each of the teams play in the round robin, followed by the playoffs.
The 5th grade Eagles took the floor with hopes of a good showing at the tournament this year. The athletes listened to Coach Kashiwa as he called out the starting lineup for the first game. The starting five; JalenM, JakeO, JacobU, SierraA, and EvaT took the floor determined to play hard. The rest of the team cheered them on while waiting for their turn to show the team they came to play.
After three hard fought games, the team came out of the round robin with a 1-2 record and headed into the playoffs. They faced Pearl City Elementary in the first round of the playoffs and the team was up to the challenge! Next they faced Palisades in the semi-finals and although they fought hard, worked as a team and they fell short of moving on to the finals.
“We all played hard and worked our hearts out so there is nothing to be ashamed of because it was a tough tournament." JalenM
Shortly after the 5th grade championship game, the 6th graders took the floor with Coach Tashiro leading them. The starting five of XavierC, LoganH, ChaysenM, AddisonH, and ColbieT took the floor. The team played hard in the round robin but struggled to find a rhythm. Each of the three games were narrow losses. A few lucky bounces here and there and the team could have won each game. This didn't deter the team coming into the first round of the playoffs though. They came out onto the floor, worked as a team, had strong fundamentals and ended up defeating the competition with ease. They played Pearl City Highlands Elementary in the semi-finals and again struggled. Frustration set in and the teams mental toughness was definitely challenged. After a heartbreaking loss by 4 points, the team walked off the court and the tournament was over for them.
"That's the funny thing about sports, there are things you can control and things you cannot. As long as you gave it your all out there, you have nothing to be ashamed of." Coach Tashiro.
There is only about 300 days left before next year's Complex Basketball team starts up, and the Momilani Eagles will be ready! We look forward to seeing many of our student athletes out again and welcome the next group to compete with us!
Big Mahalo to Coaches Tashiro, Yasui, Kashiwa, and Barnett for dedicating the time and effort. They help learn those lessons that come with being part of a team; dedication, teamwork, hard work, and good sportsmanship.
Also thank you to those parents and families that came out and supported our students as they represented our school in this tournament. Without your support none of this would be possible.
A final thank you to Coach Kyle from Pearl City High School and the HS Basketballs teams for spending some practices with us rain or shine! We hope we made you proud.
Looking forward to next season! Great job Eagles! Next year we go all the way!
PC High School Coach and Players Visit Momilani Team
Last Thursday, as the Momilani Basketball Team setup for practice, there was a buzz and excitement. They were expecting special visitors.
As they began weaving drills, the PC High School boys and girls basketball players came into view over the tall grass of the field. Not even the rain could dampen the spirits on the court, as Coach Kyle Martin and his players came to work out with our students!
The students quickly broke up into four groups and began working on drills together such as dribbling, free throws, and layups. The high school students led the drills and gave instructions and support to our students. After a short downpour, it was back onto the court for some scrimmage and position practice.
The students and coaches of Momilani want to extend a heartfelt mahalo to those that participated and look forward to connecting our schools again!
